Katherine Isabelle James is not a New York native. She is actually from Daytona Beach but moved to the city to attend Columbia University(currently a senior forensic science major). She also became Kate James, wanting to blaze her own trail and not be in her family's shadow.

Kate's family is full of cops and lawyers so going into law was no shock, the real shock was her going into the crime lab than the field. But her family has been supportive of her goal and her decision to leave Florida for school. Her reason was simple: the NYPD lab is one of the best in the country. But she just wanted to be seen on her own terms and more than the daughter of a famous Daytona lawyer.

Kate's on the side of the law of course, but she's not told her family back in Florida about things to keep the worry at bay. After all they did convince a younger cousin to leave Miami because of hurricane season. Otherwise Kate's family is your classic one: her and her parents. She calls home at least once a week with tales of school and more routine cases.

Home is now a studio apartment near campus. It's small but for her its more cozy than cramped. Her style is a mix of the modern and the vintage, which works on a lab tech's pay.

In school and in the lab she's pure professional but can cut loose with her friends beyond the office. She loves karaoke and goes latin dancing, plus trips to the movies and going out to eat.

She's a bit of a mom hen among the night shift crew, especially her fellow lab rats. She's the one making runs for fast food and makes sure everyone does eat. Kate's also become a favorite among the younger cops and firefighters, they like having someone young around. Plus there's good natured banter and flirting along the way.

Her niche is weapons but after taking a class on blood splatter she's been thinking about making both fields her own. Plus she's been trying to unravel Dexter for months, just a small slice of life for a girl living in the crime world. But she's only seen a few major cases in her first few months of being a NYPD lab rat.

Its no shock that she loves CSI and most any crime based show. But people would be shocked to learn she loves Spongebob Squarepants along with Supernatural, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Dancing with the Stars, Heroes, House, Mad Men and Iron Chef among others. She also dreams of becoming a Companion of the Doctor (Ten being her favorite)

Her dream guy is a combo of Ianto Jones, Greg Sanders and Jack Harkness. Accents don't hurt either.

She's been known to blast anything from 30 Seconds to Mars to Michael Buble while in the lab. Of course that leads to friendly ribbing from fellow techs but all in good fun of course.

She loves to remind people there's more to her than brains: but will anyone see past her semi famous last name?
